Falconers from Qatar ruled the roost in the GCC category over two days of exciting competition in the Falconry Championship Tilwah ‘Fakhr Al Ajyal’ organized by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center (HHC) in Dubai.

The championship is being held at the dedicated Fazza Championship for Falconry site in Ruwayyah off Emirates Road (Exit 55) will continue until 13th February.

Abdullah Al Marri’s falcon ‘Oslo’ won the Shaheen Wahish Farkh (GCC category) on Monday a time of 19.097 seconds. Talal Al Nuaimi’s entry came second in a time of 19.137 seconds while Mohammed Ibrahim Al Musnad also from Qatar came third clocking 19.577 seconds.

In the Shaheeh Wahish Jernas (GCC category), Saleh Rashid Saleh’s falcon won in a time of 19.446 seconds followed by Qatari Abdulaziz  Mubarak Nasser  Ali’s entry in a time of 19.624 seconds. Bahraini owner Ali Saeed Kambash’s falcon came third in a time of 19.849 seconds.

Ms. Suad Ibrahim Darwish, Director of Championships at HHC, said the record number of 430 entries from the GCC countries over two days of competitions reflected the growing interest for the sport of falconry in the region.

“Their participation adds an international flavour to the tournament. Although there is a competitive edge, their participation in a spirit of fair play is something that should be admired. We are glad that the falconers from GCC countries have brought their best falcons which affirms their interest to preserve the heritage of the region and traditional sports such as falconry,” she said.

Stars

A feature in this championship was the close relationship the falconer has with his falcon by giving the bird popular names of sports stars, especially from football.

In the Shaheen Wahish Jernas (UAE Local) event, falconer Mohammed Rashid Al Ketbi participated with a bird named ‘Messi’ along the lines of the global soccer star from Argentina Lionel Messi, because his favourite club is Barcelona.

Among the most prominent names of sports stars carried by falcons during the Fazza Championship for Falconry this season were ‘ACR 7’ which is similar to Portugal and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo and Olympic superstar Usain Bolt.

Qatar falconers swept the board in the Hurr Wahish Farkh event taking the first five places with Nasser Mohammed Al Nuaimi’s falcon ‘Dalmook’ winning it in a time of 19.354 seconds flying at speeds of up to 74.40 kilometers per hour.
