Jealousy is the main reason Brits unfollow celebrities on social media
New research carried out by discount website www.VoucherCodesPro.co.uk found the nation like to ditch unpopular famous people on social media when they have differing opinions from them.
Jealousy was chosen more than their finances and luxury lifestyle.
Of these jealous types, 61 per cent said they were most envious of the free products or services the already wealthy celebrities receive.
Yet whilst clicking ‘unfollow’ is rife, over half (51 per cent) of those surveyed admitted they regularly – at least once a week – check up on celebrities and public figures who they don’t even like or follow.
George Charles from VoucherCodesPro.co.uk said: “Everyone likes to keep tabs on their favourite celebrities… however, it’s funny how fickle we are when it comes to unfollowing those we put on such a pedestal.”
The poll involved quizzing 2,099 British adults over the age of 18 about celebrity culture and their attitudes towards them on social media. And of these 94 per cent revealed they follow celebrities on social media, with 71 per cent admitting they had unfollowed a star they once admired.
The top five reasons for an unfollow are as follows:
1. Jealousy (money/luxury lifestyle/relationship status etc) – 79 per cent
2. I disagree with their views/strong opinions – 61 per cent
3. Spam posts/paid ad’s – 57 per cent
4. They were rude to their followers – 23 per cent
5. Their relationship status changed – 4 per cent
